Dianne and Jenna are among dozens of area women who advertise on Craigslist, the popular Web service that accepts free ads for just about anything: jobs, houses, erotic services. Dianne, Jenna and Tavonia Silmon-Gray posted erotic services ads on Craigslist. Responding to Silmon-Gray's ad, Harrisburg Police met the 26-year-old Willow Street woman in downtown Harrisburg last Wednesday. After a high-speed car chase into York County, police charged her with prostitution and other counts. As part of an extensive Craigslist sting, Harrisburg Police will charge other area women later this week, according to Matthew Coulter, a spokesman for the Mayor's Office in Harrisburg. "We actually will have quite a few arrests due to the Craigslist prostitution sting," Coulter said. He said this probably is the first time Harrisburg Police have carried out a prostitution sting based on Craigslist ads. A Lancaster Police spokesman said the bureau never has carried out a sting based on Craigslist ads. But police in other cities, including Chicago, Seattle and Jacksonville, have. Craigslist advertisers also have been prosecuted for other illegal activities. Police in Grand Rapids, Mich., arrested a woman last week for allegedly using the site to try to hire a hit man to kill the wife of a man with whom she had had an affair. Craigslist's rules prohibit illegal activity, but the company says its staff cannot monitor millions of ads posted worldwide. Instead, Craigslist asks the site's users to flag objectionable ads. Craigslist then checks them out and may remove them. Erotic services ads generate many of the site's "hits" and complaints. Few of these ads could be mistaken for a newspaper "personal," but the explicitness of their content varies. Some ads include photos. Clothing is optional in Craigslist listings. By 7 this morning, three new ads had been posted offering some kind of "erotic services" for men on Craigslist's Lancaster site. Men also offer services for women. And there are other categories. A Millersville couple, for example, recently posted an ad seeking a friendly female with "a big sex drive." Several of the ads include telephone numbers. Most depend on e-mail communication. A New Era reporter made a few calls to discover what services the women offer and how much they charge. Few ads supply specific details. All who answered said they live in "suburban Lancaster." They did not reveal their names. A 21-year-old woman who has advertised on Craigslist for about a year said she charges $200 an hour for a massage. Or she'll dance in lingerie for the same price. She said $200 is reasonable because she's a professional dancer. "You wouldn't believe the calls I get," she said. "I have no problem getting clients." She said she only accepts one or two clients a week because she has another job. She explained that she's not interested in charging for sex. "I do know girls who claim they'll charge $200 an hour for sex," she said, "but if they offer full service they usually want $500." Another woman, whose ad claims only that she offers a "sensual, exotic experience," also said she charges $200 an hour for a massage. "It's a more personal massage." "It's more detailed." A man answered another telephone. He said that advertiser also charges $200 an hour. "She'll settle on that when you're there," he said. Some of Craigslist's Lancaster ads for erotic services appear to be more "professional" than others.
